Plenty of small teams run on Discord, and they are not wrong to: it is fast, free and everybody already has it. This page is about what happens when that team starts signing contracts — because Discord says, on its own homepage, that it is group chat that is all fun and games.

Giving the point away
Three of them, and none is a throwaway. If these are what your team runs on, Discord is the right answer and we would rather you knew now.
Discord’s always-on voice rooms are the closest thing anyone has built to sitting in the same room. Our meetings start from the chat and end; theirs is a place you hang around in, and for some teams that is the whole point.
No seat count, no history cap, no meeting timer. For a small team with no budget, Discord gives away more than our free plan does, and pretending otherwise would be silly.
Your new hire has used Discord since school. Whatever we do with onboarding, we cannot beat a product people already have muscle memory for.
Where the difference shows
A message becomes a task with an owner and a deadline, a reminder or a calendar event, and the comments on that task come back to the channel it came from. On Discord a decision stays a message and is found again by scrolling.
Discord’s paid plans are personal subscriptions someone buys for themselves. There is no company account to administer, no seat to revoke when someone leaves, and no invoice the company can put in its books as a licence.
Roles on every plan, guests who see one named channel and one project, an audit log in the product, and data migration included everywhere — including on the way out.
Kanban, list, table and Gantt, dated tasks in a shared calendar synced both ways with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, and a dashboard showing what is about to reach you.

Discord’s terms are consumer terms: the European court clause is written for consumers residing in the EU, and we could not find business terms alongside it. Ours are written for a company, with a Polish company on the other side.
